Yellowstone National Park

Yellowstone NP Yellowstone National Park is located in the northwest corner of Wyoming. While the majority of the land area of Yellowstone is in Wyoming, parts of the park are also found in Montana and Idaho. Yellowstone became a National Park on March 1, 1872 when President Ulysses S. Grant signed the law establishing the area as a natural reserve. At that time Yellowstone became the first national park in the world acclaimed for its many diverse ecosystems, geothermal systems such as its geysers, its wildlife and its natural beauty.

Yellowstone National Park consists of an area of over 3,460 square miles and includes natural features such as lakes, mountain ranges, rivers and canyons. The dominant geological feature is the Yellowstone Caldera, an active supervolcano which has erupted at least three times in the past two million years. It is the volcanic activity that fuels the many hot springs and geysers found in Yellowstone.

Yellowstone National Park receives over two million visitors each year with July being the peak month for tourism. There are about 310 miles of paved roads in the park that can be accessed from five entrances. There are nine visitor centers and museums in Yellowstone. There are a dozen campgrounds with more than 2,000 campsites available to visitors in the summer and spring months.
