Established in 1607 as Virginia Colony, Virginia was the first permanent English settlement in the New World. Virginia is one of the thirteen original colonies and later joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. Officially known as the Commonwealth of Virginia the state is also known as the Old Dominion. Virginia was the site of numerous Revolutionary and Civil War battles. These battlefields, the historic English settlements and numerous other attractions make Virginia a prime tourism destination. With a total land area of 42,770 square miles, Virginia is the 35th largest state and is bordered on the south by North Carolina and Tennessee, by Kentucky and West Virginia on the west and Maryland on the north. Geographically, Virginia is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the north by Chesapeake Bay and on the west by the Appalachian Mountains.
