In area Oregon is the ninth largest state with an area of 98,381 square miles. With a history that goes back thousands of years, this state became the Oregon Territory in 1848 and encompassed the areas of Washington State as well as most of Idaho. During the Oregon Trail period (1842-1843) thousands of settlers came to the area and in February 1859 Oregon was admitted to the Union.

Oregon is part of the Pacific Northwest and is bordered by Washington on the north, California and Nevada to the south, and Idaho to the east.
