Las Cruces has a history that extends back
into prehistory. When the Spanish first explored the area in the late
1500's Native American groups had inhabited the area for at least the
Paleoindian period of prehistory as evidenced by the well known Folsom
points that were first found in northeast New Mexico. In more recent
prehistory New Mexico and Northern Mexico have been home to agricultural
cultures that lived throughout the area. Some of the cultural influences
of these earlier groups still play a part in modern New Mexico Culture.
In the last three centuries the area including Las Cruces has been claimed by the Spanish, by Mexico, by the Republic of Texas and at the end of the Mexican-American War became a territory of the United States. Las Cruces was founded shortly after that when in 1849 the US Army laid out the structure of the city. By 1860, Mesilla had more residents than Las Cruces but in a pivotal event where Las Cruces donated lands for the right of way to the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad. This brought some economic development to the area and eventually Las Cruces incorporated in 1907.
Founded in 1888, New Mexico State University has grown as the community has grown and now has an enrollment exceeding 18 thousand students. New Mexico State University has had a profound impact on the growth, culture and economy of Las Cruces. Another factor in the economic development of Las Cruces are the White Sands Missile Range and the White Sands Test Facility. As Las Cruces is the closest city to these government facilities it has benefited economically.
With the diverse mix of culture and a long history Las Cruces has developed a strong, unique local culture. Las Cruces is unique in that it has a city museum system. The City of Las Cruces Museum System includes the Las Cruces Railroad Museum, the Las Cruces Museum of Art, the Las Cruces Museum of Culture and Science and the Branigan Culture Center. Visitors can schedule tours for groups to one or all of these museum.
Las Cruces is a city that believes in parks with over 30 of them in the city. Las Cruces also has a Farmers and Crafts Market that is located on Main Street and takes place every Wednesday and Saturday beginning at 8:30. Las Cruces also holds a Music on the Park event each Sunday beginning on Memorial Day throughout the summer until Labor Day weekend. These events are free.
