|The Fremont Street Experience is the consolidation and
transformation of the downtown Las Vegas area, known in the past as
'Glitter Gulch' into an outstanding and popular venue for
entertainment and as a destination.
When it opened in December 1995, the Fremont Street Experience
turned the old Fremont Street 'cruise' area into a pedestrian mall.
The 'new' downtown is spacious, elegant and very clean. The Fremont
Street Experience is a joint project between the City of Las Vegas
and the ten major casino - resorts in the downtown area with some
participation by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.
Every night beginning at
either 6:30 or 7:00 and continuing until midnight, a light and sound
show is presented 'on' the four block long canopy. The frame hangs 90
feet above ground level and consists of 2.1 million lights that are
controlled by 36 computers.
The shows are dramatic and colorful. On the weekends it is quite
crowded. There is definitely a special atmosphere when the show comes
on and the huge crowd stops to watch it. The shows are very high
quality with excellent graphics and sound. After a few minutes, the
show is over and things return to 'normal'.
The mall like
environment gives the visitor a different kind of look at Las Vegas.
