Alabama is named after an Indian tribe that inhabited the central part of the state when it was first explored by Hernando De Soto in the 16th century. The oldest city in Alabama is Moble, established by the French in 1702. Alabama is located next to Georgia to the east, Mississippi to the west, Florida to the south and Tennessee on the north. Alabama currently has over 4.8 million residents and it is the 30th largest state with over 52 thousand square miles.
